Italy attracts visitors for a wide variety of reasons, from its world-famous cuisine and wines to its ancient history and architecture. The country also has a range of fascinating historical facts, some of which are listed below. 1. The University of Rome, also known as La Sapienza, dates back to the year 1303 and was established by the Catholic Church. 2. Italy likely derives its name from the Greek word “italos,” meaning “calf,” attributed to eighth-century Greek settlers. Another possible origin comes from Southern Italian tribes, whose symbol was the bull. 3. In the 1930s, Benito Mussolini began trying to eradicate foreign words from the Italian language, even renaming Disney characters, such as Mickey Mouse, who became known as Topolino. 4. Italy did not officially become a country until 1870, when all the city-states became united as a single nation.
